Our small illustration group is putting together a glossary, and the section about face outlines needs a clearer editorial approach. One draft lists category names without explaining the observations behind them, while another gives so much detail that the distinctions disappear. A reference about determining face shape might help us decide which observations belong in each entry. My preference is a consistent sequence for each entry, beginning with overall proportions and then describing the lower face contour. A shared structure might make comparisons easier without suggesting that one feature always determines the category on its own. I think the glossary should acknowledge mixed features, with a short note allowing readers to describe an outline between categories. For the diagrams, I would use simple line drawings at the same scale and leave hairstyle details out of the comparison. I do not want the glossary to rank shapes or suggest that an illustrator should change the features of a real subject. What would you include in a short definition so it remains useful alongside a diagram without promising a definitive classification?
Our drawing class has an exercise on facial outlines, and I need to label my sketches. I can draw the outline, but explaining why I called it oval rather than oblong is harder. My aim is to record the proportions I see, without treating any outline as the ideal. I have oval face shape on my reading list for the terminology. Would you mark the widest area first, then compare the overall length with the width? There is room for a few guide marks, though I do not want them to overwhelm the sketch. I would still describe the forehead and jaw individually, even when the overall category seems clear. I would appreciate a worked drawing example rather than a collection of celebrity comparisons. The assignment asks for a reasoned description, so simply writing a category name will not be enough. How would you explain a borderline example to someone learning to observe proportions?
